A review of "Ark: the web series" I posted awhile ago.....
This could be really big...
My first view of the Hula site; thank you for posting this series. It has a lot of potential to be a regular show on a weekly basis on networks. Some points I'd like to share:
The first episodes were good; I found the crew did a nice job with framing, setting up what was next, etc. The shots that the 'child' did were well done. The forrest/coming out of a grave/running through woods worked well too. A bit on the 'Bond' side with the roving hidden cameras in the bushes, the effects and story line kept my interest.
In the third episode, I found the acting of the character of the astronaut struggling a bit, thus creating a bit of difficulty in giving character Connie's actor something to work off of. I know the characters just met each other, but maybe it was the writing or something, it just didn't flow with the excitement that was attempted to be generated.
Episode 4: the characters are more comfortable with each other, physical proximity tighter, technology advancement shared, and….the files come up on the astronaut. The footage that was shot did not look genuine; it did not look like it came from the 50's or 60's; even the handling of the cigarette didn't work. I understand what was attempted here, but more thought and time needed to go into this short segment. The guy at the oven during Connie's moments of footage flashbacks; nice. It created a sense of 'so this is the conspiracy….' for me. Cool. That discovery in story, that shift, is what perked my interest and kept me watching.
Episode 5,6 with 'crazy lady' (thank you for correction of language by the way, I hate it when anybody hears a language that is funky to them is automatically assumed Russian) was interesting; too bad they killed her off; she could have been a cool asset to the show later on (it's never too late to bring her back….in tv nobody really dies, do they…?).
Question: why must something be 'hit' to make it work; this got tiresome after awhile. The characters are lost, far from home, but not stupid. Give them a little more credit.
By Ep 7 : I had made up my mind that the weakest link would have to be the astronaut. Keeping aside that I am familiar with the actor playing the Connie character, and love her work, I just couldn't find myself relating to astronaut. I had a sense of real struggle, want, desperateness, need from Connie. I did not sense that from astronaut. My not even remembering his name is proof point. I just didn't' find him relatable, real. Maybe it was the writing; dunno. Wish it was different, because I really wanted to see more believable interaction between the two.
Ep 8, 9: Connie wakes up due to her child's voice. Is the child still alive, somewhere on the ship, or a voice from the grave….interesting, i thought. I also felt the panic of the helmet not working; good job, Connie. You had to hit it (again…) to make it work, but this time it did work (the action of hitting something to make it work).
Creepy voice in helmet; very good.
Showing expanse beyond door; excellent.
Overall: good show. Needs work, funding. Music needs work, more thought, connection to what you're trying to say, what's on the screen and emphasis on that. Audio was good, flowed well. Levels good. Makeup, hair, costumes, look good; lighting looks good. I would have done some of the shots a bit differently, but looks good overall. The shots didn't flow 'together' too well in some spots, so editing needed some fine tuning. Effects: seen before, but yes, do work in this application. They gave a bit of a retro feel, as do the sets. It looks like a 'working ship' instead of something completely futuristic, and that applies for this show. Direction, producing was good, considering budget, some other possible constraints. I would work on writing dialogue, work on giving astronaut more 'strength' or backbone, for lack of a better word.
This would do well on the air, or full episodes; the short format will kill it.
Good luck in this venture!! I truly hope it works out for all!!
PS: Bruce Dern's ' Silent Running'; yes, I thought that the minute I saw the 'dome'.
