Mailing List

Postby Rene on Wed Dec 02, 2009 12:16 pm

Hi Jody,

Any chance of creating a mailing list for the purpose of notifying us when Katherine posts a new blog? I'm not much for chatting on message boards so don't 'drop in' frequently, but I do enjoy reading what Katherine has to say. It would be a nice convenience.

Thanks,
Rene

Hi Rene, I can certainly try. The mass e-mail option on this board can be a little wonky sometimes, but if no one has any objections, I'll give it a go on the next blog post (if you do have an objection, speak now or forever hold your peas). Users must make sure they have "Administrators can e-mail me information:" set to "Yes" in their User Control Panel to receive an email from the Admin. (the email will come from kfomoderator[at]aol[dot]com)

ahh Miss Renee . . . old Father Shenanigan O'Flannigan 'ere would-a troi'd sendein' ya the news 'bout Miss Kathrine's latest blog postin' phenomenon but howsoever yer profile page over there states what that no e-mails can be sent to Renee and it makes me old eyes weepy and teary and moisty ta be hearin' that old song "Just Walk Away Renee" playin' in the background as i set 'ere typin' away with nothin' to say anyway. ha! . . . but . . . i'm sure what that Miss Jody will foin'd a way if there be a way ta be notificationizing when Miss katherine posts an update "blog" . . . and i'm wishin' and a-hopin' that it comes with bells and whistles and flashin' neon signs and maybe a cyber ring-tone too! . . . but . . probably not. :(

but i know that, just like you, i look forward to Katrherine's journal blog and 'er words and thoughts and observations 'bout life and times and 'speriences . . . she always brings a perspective worth noting and thinkin' about . . . and some seriousness and depth in humor and some humor in seriousness and depth and she always seems to know the difference.

Thanks for your efforts Jody. If it doesn't work out...no worries. I appreciate you trying.

Michael...you make me laugh...and frighten me just a little (in an amused way). LOL
I'm not sure if you are just messin' with me about my profile...or maybe I'm a message board dope (really, not self deprecating, just not so board savvy which doesn't bother me)...but I checked my profile and it appears to me to be all set to receive PMs or email. If that's not true then I'm not sure what needs to be changed.

Thanks for the responses!

Michael, I just sent myself a test PM and email...both worked. I'm thinking you may have spelled my name with 3 Es instead of 2.
Although my 'real' name is Renee...I usually spell it Rene online...Yes, I admit it...I'm hiding behind an E. Noone will ever guess it's really me. :) (I also don't use emodicons...yep, I'm OLD SCHOOL)

OH, and "Just walk away Renee"...here are a few fun facts:
-Released in 1966 by the Left Banke (I was 4 at the time...so I can't lie and say it was about me)
-Written by band member Michael Brown, who was 16 at the time, with help from his friends Bob Calilli and Tony Sansone. Brown wrote it after meeting Renee Fladen, the girlfriend of the band's bass player.
-Renee Fladen was in the control room when Michael Brown tried to record his harpsichord part. He later said in an interview that he was so nervous trying to play with the beautiful Renee present that his hands were shaking. In the end he gave up and returned later when he recorded it without any problem. (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)
-The line "Just walk away Renee" is often misinterpreted as "Don't walk away Renee." The singer has decided that Renee will never return his affections and is better off with her out of his life.
-The idea of using a girl's name in the title was inspired by The Beatles "Michelle."
-This was the first hit for The Left Banke. They had another a year later with "Pretty Ballerina," which was also inspired by Renee.
-In 1969, this was a #3 UK hit for The Four Tops. The Left Banke's original version never charted in England.

In the words of the late, great Paul Harvey, "and now you know...the rest of the story".
And I'll refrain from any further nonsense in this area since I know this is for message board and site issues.

Renee . . (my one and only niece is named "Renee" too also as well in adition) . . . i clicked on your name to go to the profile before . . but i see now it is operating at "full warp speed Mr. Spock - the dilythium crystals must be functioning again. ha!) . . .

thanks for the history "story behind the story of "Walk Away Renee" . . .i didn't know a lot of that . .i just always loved the song and the recording . . . and i too will also refrain from writing more here since this thread is for other purposes and reasons and i'm usually the jerk messing things up. :)

Jody, some blogs have the RSS feed, etc. I think there's a widget for such a thing ... not sure. Katherine's webcrew could add it to the blog page. Could be something to look into. :shrugs: Also, the Kindle reads blogs, so maybe it automatically checks and downloads new posts. :dunno: Again, not sure. I am sure that Katherine's webcrew know how to set up alerts though. Perhaps Katherine could set up a newsletter/mailing list? :?:

Do a search for:

RSS Widget
RSS Feed Widget

Not sure exactly what they do, or if they work with webpages, but something to look into.

Just had another thought: You or Katherine can have a locked thread where you post about a new blog being added, and members can subscribe to that thread to get alerts.

Manage subscriptions:

Below is a list of forums and topics you are subscribed to. You will be notified of new posts in either. To unsubscribe mark the forum or topic and then press the Unwatch marked button.

The blog thread sounds like a good idea, of course one would have to know about it to subscribe, and a lot of members aren't frequent visitors. of course I could send a mass email about subscribing ... lol. thanks for the links!

You're very welcome. I know some forums have it so you can set it up to get email alerts for PMs & subscribed threads, but don't know if that works here. If not, members would have to log in to get alerts, and that wouldn't work for those who mostly lurk. In which case, an RSS Feed, or some other type widget would have to be added to the webpage.

I like the idea as well...as long as there are explicit instructions for how one might go about signing up...you know me Jody, am still techno-challenged after all these years
eternally thankful...
